How MI Tri-Share Works

MI Tri-Share is an employer-based benefit for Michigan families who use licensed childcare. If your employer participates and you meet the income guidelines, the cost of care is divided into thirds:

  • 1/3 paid by your employer

  • 1/3 paid by your family

  • 1/3 paid by the State of Michigan

You still choose your childcare provider (as long as care is licensed), and Tri-Share staff coordinate payments so that your share is predictable and easier to manage.

Who MI Tri-Share Is For

Tri-Share is designed for working families whose income is too high to qualify for the state childcare subsidy, but who still need help making childcare affordable.

Typical eligibility (verified by the regional program team):

  • You live and work in Michigan.

  • Your employer is enrolled in MI Tri-Share (or is willing to join).

  • You are not eligible for the Child Development & Care (CDC) childcare subsidy.

  • Your household income is within the Tri-Share range based on family size (program guidance has referenced 200–325% of the federal poverty level; your regional hub will confirm using your documentation).

 Not sure whether you qualify?
It’s still worth exploring. The Tri-Share team will review your information and let you know if you qualify or if a different program might be a better fit.

How to Get Started With MI Tri-Share

  1. Talk to your employer.
Ask HR if your company already participates in MI Tri-Share. If not, you can share information about the program so they can explore joining.

  2. Connect with your regional Tri-Share team.
They’ll confirm whether your employer is eligible and help you begin the application process.

  3. Complete the application.
You’ll share basic information about your household, income, and your childcare needs so they can determine eligibility.

  4. Choose your childcare provider.
You can select grō childcare academy as your provider (as long as we meet licensing requirements, which we do) and finalize your enrollment schedule.

  5. Tri-Share begins.
Once approved, Tri-Share coordinates payments between your employer, the State of Michigan, and grō childcare academy. You pay only your 1/3 portion (often through payroll deduction).

Good to know: enrollment and verification can take some time. Registration fees and any tuition owed before your Tri-Share start date are usually not covered by the program.
